Meet the flashy, flamboyant youth of Johannesburg. Artist Oliver Kruger has an ongoing series named “Golden Youth”. Kruger documents new trends in Johannesburg’s youth culture. He finds his subject in the urban metropolises of Johannesburg and uses portrait photography to expand on the aesthetics and tradition of African studio photography. The images capture an individual portrait but together as a collection the images capture a larger movement. In Kruger’s careful studio portraits, each piece of clothing takes on significance towards the model’s identity; exactly manicured hairstyles and facial grooming, the choice of piercings, tattoos and jewellery.
