Robbie Kaye has created a wonderful series that combines two things that women aspire to; beauty and wisdom. All women in this series “Beauty & Wisdom” are over the age of 70 and have plenty of both. The series started at beauty salon “The Cut” in Los Angeles. Robbie was planning to shoot older ladies getting their hair done. But something about the clients grabbed Kaye’s eye, and her heart. “I saw so much more. I felt I needed to portray their dignity,” she explains. Kaye spend several years taking pictures of older women during their regular appointments at the classic beauty salons in the bigger cities and smaller towns across America, in order to witness the traditions of our mother’s generation, where elegance and grooming were and are a weekly ritual. These salons are not just places of business, but loving and supportive communities that celebrate wise women.

“Beauty & Wisdom” documents a fast-disappearing part of America and the decreasing population of mature women who have been going to the beauty salons once a week, not as a luxury but as a necessity. This series shows the grace and courage in which these women age in a society heavily focused on the beauty of youth.
