Alexander McQueen, David LaChapelle, John Galliano, the Scissor Sisters, Gareth Pugh, Lucian Freud and Lady Gaga are just a couple of names that Leigh Bowery ( 26 March 1961 - 31 December 1994) has influenced throughout his lifetime. Bowery was a performance artist, club promoter, actor, model, fashion designer. He reigned the London and New York club scene in the 1980s and 1990s with his anarchistic avant-garde style and persona; questioning and challenging society’s traditional notions of beauty, gender and sex. In 2005 a book dedicated in his honor, Leigh Bowery Looks, came out, chronicling all his most iconic and infamous outfits. The night club sensation also played a big part in the fictionalized documentary Hail the New Puritan (1987), depicting the legendary dancer and choreographer Michael Clark. Admire the nightclub sensation for yourself in the pictures below.
